Should I Wake my Sleeping Baby?

Raise your hand if you’ve ever heard someone say “Never wake a sleeping baby!”. I know I have! But the truth is, there are actually a lot of situations in which you should wake a sleeping baby. Why? Because if your baby is getting too much sleep during the day, it’s going to be very hard for them to feel tired enough to sleep at night!

Here are the situations in which I recommend waking your sleeping baby in order to promote better night sleep:

  1. During the first four weeks so that you can feed your baby every 3-4 hours around the clock.

  2. When they are learning how to sleep and are learning the difference between day and night.

  3. If your baby is struggling to fall asleep at bedtime, it might be time to cap a nap.

  4. If your baby is waking up extra early in the morning.

  5. If your baby is waking up frequently at night but taking long, or a lot of, naps during the day.

I dive into each one of these topics in detail in episode #77 in The Sleep Fairy Way Podcast. You can listen on apple HERE or on spotify HERE.

Just remember, next time someone says “Never wake a sleeping baby!”, know that it’s totally okay to dismiss that old saying:)

Happy Sleeping!
