My Top 5 Tips for Siblings Sharing a Room
Let’s talk about siblings sharing rooms.⠀⠀⠀
My girls shared a room when my oldest was 5 and my baby was just 3 months old. We lived in a 3 bedroom house and there were 5 of us at the time. Room sharing was our only option!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What if my baby wakes up crying? What if she wakes up her older sibling? How does this work?
My Tips for Room-Sharing
If possible, sleep train your baby BEFORE moving them into the sibling’s room. If they know how to sleep beforehand, there won’t be an issue! My kids share rooms every time we travel and we’ve never had a problem. ⠀
Talk to the older sibling. Let them know that “baby is learning to sleep and may cry in the night. If they do, go back to sleep and show them how it’s done!”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Crank up that sound machine! Kids can sleep through more than we give them credit for. But having a sound machine turned up helps block out other noises – including baby cries.
Put the baby to bed first, then the toddler. The toddler can understand that he/she needs to be quiet while going into the room. Make it a game of tip toe!
Give it time. If your toddler wakes up a lot during the first week or two, don’t give up! It’s an adjustment period for them. Be patient and consistent. They will both adjust and be sleeping like champs in no time.⠀
