How to Have a 5-Minute Makeup Routine: Live with Courtney Rogers
We are kicking off our self-care series with Courtney Rogers, a makeup artist and aesthetician! She has decades of experience as well as four kids, so she totally understands that moms don’t have hours to spend in front of a mirror. Read her tips below, and click on any links to check out her product recommendations! (***Her Instagram Live with Jessalyn can be found HERE.)
Foundation, Concealer, and Powder
Courtney talked about how learning the basics is really important before you add in the fun stuff. If you know which products work best for you and your face shape, then you can add some other elements here and there. But for the most part as moms, we’re just trying to look put together quickly before we head out the door!
Courtney started with Shine BB Cream, which she spread all over her face like lotion. She doesn’t usually use fingers, but this is just the best way for this product for some reason! Then she got a beauty blender sponge a little wet so she could blend her Shape Tape concealer into the inner and outer corners of her eyes, where there are often dark and red spots. Important to note: If you’re going to do foundation and concealer, you need to set it with powder. So she used Color Pop no filter translucent powder (the NYX Finishing Powder is similar), again with her beauty blender, underneath her eyes. She recommends not wiping, but pushing the product into your skin. Then she let it sit for a few minutes before she blended it in so it would last longer during the day!
Bronzer, Blush, and Highlight
Next step: apply the Shine Cosmetics Bronzer, with a dual fiber brush. Remember, the first place you put bronzer will be the darkest, so aim for right under your cheekbones for that contoured effect. Whenever you put foundation on your face you are taking away all the dimension, so you need to add that back in. The inner parts of your face should be the lightest, with the outer parts being the darkest. Circle, circle, circle, and blend, blend, blend is the name of the game here. From your cheekbone, go up to the forehead, and down to the jawline. Imagine you are trying to make a “3” on your face on both sides.
For Courtney’s eyelids, she used the same product! She just used a fluffy brush to add some dimension to her crease. Then, onto the blush! Rare Beauty Blush is actually a liquid blush. She puts a little circle right on the back of her hand, then she takes an angled brush to have more control over where it goes. Aim for right above the apples of your cheeks. Now, time to revisit and blend in that powder from before with another fluffy brush, so it blends into the blush nicely. And whatever of the blush is left on the back of her hand, she puts on her lips just to add a little more color.
The best way to apply a highlighter is a fan brush (you can get these brushes at Target!) Courtney loves the Benefit Cookie Powder Highlighter, but the Wet n’ Wild Megaglo is a great budget-friendly option too. You want to apply highlighter right on top of the cheekbone, as well as any other “high planes” of the face. This includes middle of the forehead, nose, and cupid’s bow (right above the lips). She even does a tiny little spot right at the inner corner of each eye just to highlight the eyes a little bit more.
Eyebrows, Liner, Mascara, and Lips
Courtney used Eyebrow Gel Mascara to give some more color to her eyebrows. For her eyeliner, she loves to do wingtip eyeliner on more formal days, but for everyday mom life, she loves to use the Urban Decay Eyeliner for a smudge at the corners of her eyes to make it look a little smoky. As far as mascara goes, she loves the Lash Paradise mascara, and she recommends when applying that you go back and forth, roots to tips. Add a touch of lip gloss that’s the same color as your lips such as this Shine Lip Gloss, and that’s it! It seems like a lot of product options right now, but once you get the hang of it, she literally does it in under 6 minutes.
Skin Care
Lastly, Jessalyn asked Courtney about a healthy skin routine. Courtney mentioned that the first thing you need to do if you don’t have any type of skin care routine is to just get started! Before age 30, our skin regenerates every 21 days or so. But after age 30, that regeneration time DOUBLES. So, we need to help it along! Telling those skin cells to renew will help your skin stay young and healthy. A few skin products that should be regulars for you:
Sunscreen: Look for zinc or titanium. This can go on underneath all your makeup, since it would be silly to put it on top and ruin all your work.
Foaming cleanser: Use something daily like the CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser to remove dirt, oil, and makeup, and you’re already winning.
Exfoliation: There are products such as glycolic toner that you can use 1-2 times per week if your skin is used to it, and others like an AHA BHA Peeling Solution that is just meant to be used once a week.
Moisturizer: The purpose is to give our skin back moisture. Our skin is made of lipids, so anything water-based won’t sink in since it’s lipophilic (it fears water and loves fat!) So, if we use something with oil it will sink in a little deeper and moisturize more deeply. She mentioned that any Olay Moisturizer will be great.
Eye Serum: There are many eye serums out there that can help with anti-aging, tightness, etc. Courtney hasn’t really found a favorite, but says that something is better than nothing!
Where to Find Courtney
We absolutely LOVED having Courtney featured here on The Sleep Fairy! She genuinely wants to arm women with knowledge about what they really need, instead of just throwing products at them. Check out her Instagram @courtneyrogersbeauty where she has many posts highlighting specific products or techniques and how they can enhance your beauty routine.
