Outfits for Your Postpartum Body: Live with Jazmin Snow

We were lucky enough to have a dear friend, Jazmin Snow (@byjazminsnow), chat with Jessalyn on an Instagram Live last week! She is a mama of one living in Seattle, Washington. In case you missed the Live or reading is easier, see the recap of her tips and tricks below! Also, see her curated list of pregnant, postpartum, and nursing-friendly clothing!

Jazmin’s Background

Jazmin grew up in Ecuador, in a family of shoemakers. Because of that, it was normal for them to see which trends were coming in and out of style, and which trends were here to stay. They were always up on fashion, and she said she developed a knack for what would stick, and what wouldn’t!

Preparing Your Wardrobe for Postpartum

Jazmin had some great tips that you can start implementing BEFORE you are even pregnant. For example, she knew that her feet might grow half a size bigger when she was pregnant, so about six months before she got pregnant, she would buy her shoes and other clothes a few sizes bigger.

Spending money on very specific pieces of clothing is difficult, especially when you don’t have a lot of money to spend on clothes in the first place! BUT, regardless of this, in Jazmin’s words, “You deserve to feel beautiful ALWAYS.” So even if it’s just a few pieces that can be used for multiple stages of before, during, and/or after your pregnancy, they are going to be worth it!

3 Types of Postpartum-Friendly Clothing

  1. Smocked tops. If you don’t know what “smocking” is, do a quick Google search! You will probably recognize the style, and you will appreciate it even more when you can feel comfortable in a smocked dress, shirt, etc during many different stages of pregnancy and postpartum. It is stretchy and can grow with you, and it can also still be flattering as it hugs your waist. Many smocked tops are even nursing-friendly because they’re so stretchy!

  2. Buttons. Whether it’s a shirt or a dress, buttons are extremely nursing-friendly. Plus, add a cute belt to accentuate your waist, and you look even more dressed up!

  3. Dresses. There are SO many different kinds of dresses that can help you feel comfortable postpartum, but they’re not pajamas! Anything that has a flowy skirt or where the seam is around your waistline is going to help you feel more presentable than the sweats you might go for first in your closet.

Other Postpartum Wardrobe Tips

Jazmin had several other great tips for dressing yourself postpartum. First, take the clothes OUT of your closet that don’t fit you postpartum. You don’t have to get rid of them entirely, but just put them in a different place so you don’t see them immediately in front of you every day.

When you enter a closet full of clothes you can’t wear every day, it will make you angry! You won’t want to go out, and you’ll constantly be reminded that your body isn’t what it used to be (which is okay! You just created A HUMAN.)

To combat this, invest in one pair of jeans that fits you RIGHT NOW. They don’t have to be Good American jeans, just grab something from Costco for $10-$20 that are high-waisted and will help you feel presentable as you go to your various outings (doctor’s appointments, etc). Just having this one item of clothing that fits the stage you’re in can help you feel infinitely more confident in the stage you’re in. Give yourself some grace! Your body took nine months to create this darling new baby, and your body needs time to heal and return to whatever your healthy weight is.

Next, tuck in your shirt! This will help your waist be more noticeable, and help you look slimmer and taller.

Remember that the size doesn’t matter. No one is going to ask you what size you’re wearing, just get the right size for you, in whatever you are buying! Anything that is stretchy is going to be a lot more flexible with your postpartum lifestyle, so embrace it!

Get Dressed Every Day

The last thing Jessalyn and Jazmin talked about was how getting dressed every day can change everything. It will help you feel so much better, help you be more productive, and help you feel like a better version of yourself. And we’re not talking full dress, accessories, and complete makeup done—just a simple t-shirt and pair of jeans (that fits!) and a little mascara can change your mindset for the day.

It is better to wear out your clothes than for them to gather dust in your closet, so make sure you’re investing in things you love that you will wear often!
